All Eyes on Our Cove

New York, London, Vienna, Beijing, Santiago − just some of the global locations from where architects, urban designers and landscape architects have registered for the Hobart Waterfront International Design Competition (www.hwidc.tas.gov.au).

More than 700 registrations have been received from 73 countries since the event was launched six weeks ago.

“To get this response from more than one-quarter of all countries in the world is extremely heartening,” said Jeff Gilmore, Chief Executive, Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority.

“As hoped, the world has come to Hobart because of a keen interest in the design and development of our waterfront.

"The majority of registrations have understandably come from Australia, with 150, but there are also large numbers from the USA, UK and throughout all the continents – from as far afield as Ethiopia, Morocco, Colombia and Siberia.

To keep track of progress, the foyer of the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority displays a world map marking all the countries and registrations.

“We want everyone who shares our love of the waterfront to see how this beautiful patch of Tasmania has captured the imagination of the world’s design community,” Mr Gilmore said.

“Everything will be considered – nothing is off limits. The challenge for entrants is to embrace the area’s rich history and design a contemporary cultural hub to revitalise the space.”

The competition – ‘Floating New Ideas for the Hobart Waterfront’ – will be judged by an international jury, including two architects renowned worldwide for their work on complex waterfront projects: Carme Pinos, of Spain, and Wiel Arets, of the Netherlands.

The prize pool is $160,000, with $10,000 for the winning tertiary student entry.

The competition closes on 1 December 2006 and entries will be put on public display at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in January and February next year.

Film-Makers Go Under Cover

When the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority wanted to find out what young people thought about the Hobart waterfront, it was clear this wasn’t a job for anyone who wore a suit to work.

Instead, the Authority turned to local theatre company Is Theatre and a pair of young film-makers to track down young people and ask them to reveal their thoughts.

The findings, including reality video segments shot by Sandi Rapson and Caleb Doherty (former students from the Tasmanian School of Art who now run Solid Orange Productions), show a side of Sullivans Cove that only emerges after dark.

Up close and personal:
Film-maker Sandi Rapson has captured a side of Sullivans Cove that only emerges after dark.

The videos will be screened and discussed at a public forum on 11 October 2006 with the title, ‘Are young people welcome in Tasmania’s public space?’

Based on the popular SBS television show Insight, this forum will explore access to public space and will include interviews with night-clubbers, artists and skateboarders.

The forum, which forms part of the Authority’s regular series of Conversations in the Cove events, is designed to attract and engage a young audience through audio, video and provocative questioning.

For film-maker Sandi Rapson, this project is an ideal way to show how film and video can help businesses and communities communicate with each other.

“It’s interesting to see how many people have something to say when you point a camera in their direction. It brings out all sorts of ideas that would never see the light of day if you handed them a questionnaire,” Ms Rapson said. “I hope many people take the opportunity to attend the forum and have their say – this is your chance to be heard.”

The forum will be held at the Peacock Theatre, Salamanca Place, at 6pm on Wednesday 11 October 2006. Entry is free.

As seating is limited, call 6216 4288 or send an email to info@waterfront.tas.gov.au to reserve a seat.
