Edition 8 of The Waterfront Report includes:
International Jury to Select Winning Designs
The Hobart Waterfront International Design Competition was launched on 24 July 2006 to uncover visionary ideas for the City-to-Cove area between Theatre Royal and Sullivans Cove.
Open to architects, urban designers and landscape architects worldwide, the competition has a prize pool of $160,000, including $10,000 for the winning student entry. It will be judged by an internationally recognised Jury, making it one of the most prestigious design prizes in the world.
The competition closes on 1 December 2006 and all entries will be put on public display at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in January and February 2007.
The Competition Area includes landmark sites such as Wapping Corner (the vacant land next to Theatre Royal), City Hall, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Dunn Place, Franklin Wharf and Kings Pier Marina.
 |
Looking for ideas: architects, urban designers and landscape architects are invited to let their imaginations soar for the City-to-Cove area. |
Entrants are invited to use leading-edge materials and techniques in their designs, adhering to world-class sustainable development standards while protecting and enhancing what is uniquely Tasmanian about the waterfront. They are encouraged to let their imaginations soar to improve this under-utilised connection between the city and its waterfront.
The Chair of the Jury is Geoffrey London, a Life Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, the Government Architect of Western Australia and Professor of Architecture at the University of Western Australia. His fellow Jury members are internationally renowned architects Carme Pinos (Barcelona, Spain) and Wiel Arets (Maastricht, The Netherlands), Melbourne landscape architect Catherin Bull and University of Tasmania Vice-Chancellor Daryl Le Grew.
The Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority invites all Tasmanians to support this competition by viewing, wondering, discussing and even arguing about the entries when they are in.

What Was Said at the Competition Launch
The launch of the Hobart Waterfront International Design Competition was attended by more than 60 people and was widely reported by local and national media.
Special guests at the launch included:
- the Premier of Tasmania Paul Lennon MHA
- Sir Guy Green, Chairman of Trustees, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and Chairman, Ten Days on the Island
- Bob Nation, Past President, Royal Australian Institute of Architects
- representatives of local business and community groups.
Among the messages of encouragement were:
“This is an unprecedented opportunity to find out how local, national and international experts feel we can improve the connection between the city centre and the waterfront. We want to come up with exciting ideas that recognise the maritime history of the waterfront and encourage contemporary activity.” – Paul Lennon MHA, Premier of Tasmania.
“This is an amazing challenge that will require big ideas. Appropriate change could realise a new vitality for the area ... in that context it is as important to Australia as the Sydney Opera House design competition.” – Bob Nation, Past President, Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
“Hobart is a remarkable city … [and] like all port cities around the world, Hobart is facing the pressures of change. But, unlike other places, Hobart has a real understanding that its city must simultaneously embrace both the opportunities of its future and the heritage of its past.” – Professor Tom Heneghan, Competition Adviser, University of Sydney.
“We’re looking for great ideas and world-class concepts for this magnificent site. Everything will be considered – nothing is off limits. The competition allows the complexity of the site to be explored to its fullest, with opportunities to link our past to our future.” – Jeff Gilmore,
Chief Executive, Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority.
