Waterfront Tree Debate: Have your say

Download a PDF version of Edition 13 as published.

Edition 13 of The Waterfront Report includes:

We're Starting a Conversation

The Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority is hosting a public forum titled To Tree or Not to Tree: Do We Really Need More Greenery on the Waterfront?

This will be an entertaining and informative event as opposing sides argue whether Hobart would be better off with more greenery on the waterfront.

A team of ‘tree champions’ will plead their case that Sullivans Cove is bleak without foliage, while skeptics will explain why there is no need for contrived landscaping on reclaimed land within a working port.

It’s a topic sure to fire up devotees of either side – in fact, entries were divided on this very issue in the recently completed Hobart Waterfront International Design Competition.

Whatever your persuasion – tree hugger, concrete lover, resident, occasional visitor – come along and share your point of view.

Free entry - all welcome.

Topic: To Tree or Not To Tree: Do We Really Need More Greenery on the Waterfront?
Time: 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Date: Thursday, 22 November 2007
Venue: Dechaineux Theatre, Tasmanian School of Art
Hunter Street, Hobart
Enquiries: 6216 4288

An Outsider's View of Hobart

More than 120 people attended a public lecture on 19 October 2007 by cultural commentator and prize-winning architect Esa Laaksonen, Director of the Alvar Aalto Academy, Helsinki, Finland.

In his first visit to Tasmania, Mr Laaksonen delivered a thought-provoking talk about the key roles of architecture and design in shaping modern cities and society.

The lecture, jointly presented by the University of Tasmania and the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority, was designed to enhance dialogue between places at the creative edges of our globe – Finland in the north and Tasmania in the south.

Leading Design Duo Accept Waterfront Challenge

Two of Australia’s leading architects have accepted offers to join the Sullivans Cove Design Panel.

Robert McGauran, left, is a prominent national advocate for urban design and planning. His architectural practice (McGauran Giannini Soon Pty Ltd Architects, Urban Planners and Interior Designers) is highly regarded for designing housing, retail and public facilities, including waterfronts, schools and community hubs.

Nigel Bertram, left, is Director of NMBW Architecture Studio, of Melbourne, and a Senior Lecturer at the School of Architecture and Design at RMIT University. He has won many awards for his outstanding work and is the author of four books on urban architecture and international trends.

Inaugural panel member Barrie Shelton will be spending much of the coming year overseas and has resigned from the Design Panel. The Authority would like to thank Barrie for his important contribution to waterfront issues over many years.

Project Updates

Hobart Railyards

A tender to undertake strategic planning and urban design consultancy services for the Hobart Railyards has been awarded to a joint bid by Spackman and Mossop in conjunction with Tony Caro Architecture.

The consultants’ report, including advice about any statutory amendments that may be required if a new Royal Hobart Hospital is built on the site, will be available for public comment in April 2008.

* More information about the Railyards Project is available on this website.

Brooke St Ferry Pier Redevelopment

A project to create a new home for Hobart’s ferry fleet has moved to the next stage with a shortlist of interested developers preparing tender bids and concept plans for the Department of Economic Development.

The current pier is reaching the end of its life span and needs replacing with a modern, less cluttered, visitor-friendly facility. The Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority is expecting to receive a formal proposal by the middle of 2008.

Planning Scheme Amendment

The Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority has recommended changes to the Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme 1997 to clarify the provisions about signs.

The changes are contained in a document now on public display: Amendment 1-2007.

The changes are mostly minor and editorial in nature. They are designed to make the planning scheme easier to read and understand. Importantly, they clarify what is allowable in Sullivans Cove in order to retain the area’s heritage values while reducing complexity for business owners.

The changes do not alter the planning scheme’s policy basis or strategic direction.

If you wish to know more, please obtain a copy of the amendment from our office (week days 10am-4pm, 5 Franklin Wharf, Hobart) or visit our website at www.waterfront.tas.gov.au

Deadline for representations is 23 November 2007.

* More information about the Amendment, including the Amendment document download, is available on this website.

Message to Business Owners

As many business owners are aware, there is a renewed effort to reduce the amount of liquid trade waste entering Hobart’s sewage system.

As the permit authority for the waterfront, the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority is working alongside the Hobart City Council to ensure business owners in our area comply with the Building Act 2000 and Tasmanian Plumbing Regulations 2004.

The Authority has written to business owners to help them understand their responsibilities and provide information about how to comply within the required timeframes. If you have been overlooked, please call us on 6216 4288 or send email to info@waterfront.tas.gov.au and we will follow up promptly.

* More information about liquid trade waste, including the downloadable information kit, is available on this website.
