Competition Update

The first entries have started to arrive at the office of the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority for the Hobart Waterfront International Design Competition .

Although the final deadline is still six days away, it is clear the world is taking notice of our waterfront, with the first three entries from Houston (USA), Rome (Italy) and Zurich (Switzerland).

The competition is designed to generate ideas – there is no commitment to build – and is a fresh approach to discovering and developing future possibilities for the complex city space known as the City Hall Axis.

By offering this multi-site ‘canvas’ to a world-class field of architects, landscape architects and urban designers, the widest possible range of design ideas that illustrate the potential of this area can be explored. These ideas will apply to individual sites within the axis as well as the area as a whole, which is an important yet underutilised connection between the waterfront and the city.

Once the entries are in, they will be assessed by a jury that includes architects Carme Pinos, of Spain, and Wiel Arets, of The Netherlands, and the winners will be announced in January 2007.

To see the results for yourself, make sure you visit the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery when the entries go on display from 26 January to 18 February 2007.

In the meantime, if you want to know more, please visit the competition web site at www.hwidc.tas.gov.au.

Young People Welcome the Conversation

About 70 people attended Conversations in the Cove last month to discuss the topic, ‘Are young people welcome in Tasmania’s public space?’

This event was a joint production by the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority, Is Theatre and Solid Orange Productions.

Three video segments – street life, arts life and nightlife – were shown while moderator Ryk Goddard asked provocative questions to stimulate debate. Major talking points were:

  • community attitudes to activities such as skateboarding, graffiti art and drinking on the lawns of Salamanca Place.
  • concerns about a lack of public toilets plus issues of security and cleanliness.
  • economic importance of the arts sector and creative community.
  • support for live music.
  • public transport.
  • approaches to dealing with safety and violence (while retaining the waterfront’s edginess).
  • seeking a balance between concrete and grass.

The next Conversation will be held on 6 February 2007 to coincide with the exhibition of entries from the Hobart Waterfront International Design Competition.

Students' Urban Design Ideas on Display

The Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority has been working with the Hobart City Council, State Government and RSL to explore ways to improve the approach to Sullivans Cove and the city via the Tasman Highway, including the Queens Domain and the Cenotaph/Regatta Grounds.

As part of this project, students from the University of Sydney’s Postgraduate Urban Design Program were asked to propose design ideas to improve this area, focusing on the entry and exit, connections between the outskirts of the city and the waterfront, and the landscape qualities of the entrance route.

An exhibition of students’ work from this project can be seen at the Authority’s office from Monday 11 December 2006, continuing until 16 February 2007.
