Welcome

As the planning authority responsible for protecting, enhancing and developing Sullivans Cove and surrounding areas, the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority shares the pride felt by all Tasmanians about one of the great sea ports of the world.

We love its unique character and we understand the expectations of all Tasmanians about the area’s future as a working port, cultural hub and community asset.

The Authority will be a guardian of the Waterfront and a trustee for future generations of Tasmanians. We aim to carry out our role openly, consultatively and transparently.

For this reason, we have established our office in the heart of the Waterfront in a building designed by colonial architect Henry Hunter.

This building is a glowing testament to the pioneering spirit that built the city of Hobart and a symbol of our city’s ability to adapt to changing times.

Please come and visit. We are more than happy to work with any individual or organisation interested in the future of Sullivans Cove and surrounding areas. Our opening hours are 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday, or at other times by appointment.

Alternatively, you can:

  • call to speak to a staff member on 03 6216 4299
  • leave a voice message on our toll-free line 1800 618 166
  • send an email to info@waterfront.tas.gov.au
  • send an SMS to 0429 807 418
  • write to us at GPO Box 2114, Hobart 7001.

From Our Last Meeting

The Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority met on Monday, 16 May 2005. At this meeting, it was agreed the Authority would continue to work towards:

  • preparations for an international design competition to improve the axis between City Hall, Dunn St car park, Victoria Dock and beyond
  • new ferry berths at Brooke Street Pier as a permanent home for our prized ferry and tour boat operators
  • support for the small business community that contributes to the vibrant energy of our Waterfront
  • helping pedestrians feel safe by encouraging more family-friendly walkways
  • developing long-term strategies to deal with traffic and movement, arts and culture, and events and the public domain.

Planning Decisions

The Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority is responsible for all planning permit applications within the area covered by the Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme 1997.

The Authority will ensure all discretionary applications are:

  • advertised in the Classifieds section of The Mercury newspaper
  • published on the Authority’s web site at www.waterfront.tas.gov.au (see Statutory Notices)
  • made available for inspection at the Authority’s offices at 5 Franklin Wharf, Hobart.

Representations about any application can be made in writing to the Authority, usually within 14 days of the application being advertised.

For a full list of decisions, please check our web site (see Determinations).

Adhering to 7 Principles

As well as looking into the future, the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority will protect the unique qualities of an area which defines the identity, vitality and image of the Tasmanian people. At all times the Authority will be guided by seven principles:

  1. To protect our unique heritage
  2. To ensure we have a working port
  3. To nurture our maritime history
  4. To encourage a family-friendly environment
  5. To adhere to world-class, sensitive design standards
  6. To build on our artistic strengths
  7. To support small business and our creative industries.

These principles have been distilled from many years of community debate, including widespread consultation surrounding development of the Hobart Waterfront Urban Design Framework.
