Car Parking on Franklin Wharf

The Authority and Tasports worked closely together throughout 2005 to bring about changes to improve Franklin Wharf.

This involved removing some of the long term parking from Franklin Wharf making the water’s edge more accessible to the public.

The changes, which came into effect in December 2005, have created a clear pedestrian route between Hunter Street and Salamanca Place and reduced the visual impact of parked cars on Franklin Wharf.

As part of the project, students from the University of Sydney’s Post-Graduate Urban Design Program were asked to generate design ideas and principles to improve this area.

Illuminating the Cove

Conceptual Street Lighting Strategy

Lighting can reveal the character and quality of a city.

It can make people feel safe and welcome.

It can encourage activity and improve legibility.

To understand what is possible on the Hobart waterfront, the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority commissioned Heffernan Button Voss Architects to propose new lighting concepts for the area.

In their report, the consultants identify seven key spatial types:

  • Wharf edge
  • Wall
  • Floor
  • Major Streets
  • Minor Streets
  • Parks, and
  • Landmarks.

For each type, they propose lighting principles and conceptual strategies.

Complementing their ideas are lighting precedents from other towns and cities that are applicable to Sullivans Cove.

This report has been forwarded to Aurora, Tasports and the Hobart City Council for their consideration.

The full report is available below to download, as well as a one-page information sheet.

Two versions of the report are available. The high resolution A3 version provides greater image quality, while the low resolution A4 version is more suitable for slower connection speeds.
