Hobart City

Tasmania is the most southerly of Australia's six states. It is an island with a population of approximately 500 000 people and is separated from the rest of Australia by Bass Strait, a water body 300 kilometres wide.

Tasmania has a temperate maritime climate with four distinct seasons. In summer (December to February) the average maximum temperature is 21° Celsius (70° Fahrenheit), while in winter (June to August) the average maximum is 12°C (52°F) and the average minimum is 4°C (40°F).

The Tasmanian economy has principally developed through agriculture, mining, fishing and forestry. The state is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination attracting more than 800 000 visitors per year.

Established in 1804, Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and is Australia's second oldest city with a population of just under 200 000. The City of Hobart is bordered by the waters of the River Derwent and the imposing high ground of the Wellington Range (the summit, Mount Wellington is 1270 metres above sea level).
